Morning , everyone. Today we’re going to visit the People’s Great Hall of Chongqing, a symbol building of our city Chongqing. It’s in Yuzhong District, about ten minutes ride from our hotel. The People’s Great Hall of Chongqing is a very magnificent 壮大的architecture. The construction of this building started in 1951 and was completed in 1955. It took us 4 years to complete it. Consisting of the main building and two wing buildings, the whole complex综合体 covers a total area of 66,000 square meters. The main building is 65 meters tall with a ball-shaped cover. Inside is a big round hall, which is 46 meters in diameter直径, and 55 meters in net height净高, without a single pillar柱. It is supported by the huge steel net on the top. The hall has four floors and it can hold 5,000 people for conferences, concerts, drama performances, and other cultural activities. The two wing buildings are used as a hotel. It’s a 3-star hotel and it is the first hotel to receive foreign visitors in our city The whole complex are in the style of ancients. It looks like an ancient building. As you can see, the main part is an imitation of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. The front part of the main building is an imitation of the Tian An Men city tower. The two wing buildings are an imitation of the forbidden city. But it is not an ancient building. It’s a modern one. It is made of steels and concrete. It is a masterpiece of well combination of both ancient architectural art and modern technique. And it plays an important part in China’s architectural history. In 1982, in the book The Comparative Architectural History by London University and the Royal Architects Association of Great Britain, 47 well-known Chinese architectures were included and introduced to the world, among which our Great Hall ranked the second (the first was the Temple of Heaven).
