Abstract Thegrouptestingproblemsalsofallunderthegeneralheadingofdy—
namicprogramming1【】，inthattheyinvolvethedeterminationofproximatecontrol
criteriaformakingasequenceofdecisionsduringagrouptestingprocedure，with
themotiveofminimizingsomefunctionofasetofparma etersbywhichthergoup
testingprocedureisspecified．Inthispapertheauthorsfirstlyestablishaprox-
imatecontrolcriteriaofrmakingasequenceofdecsiionsduringagroup testing
procedure，thenconsidertheproblem ofascertainingtheminimum numberoftests
whichsufficetodetermineonedefectivecoin inasetofn coinsbyapplyingthe
fuzzydominatingcriteria．Inparticular，thispaperisconcernedwith proximate
controlproblem，inwhichanoptimalprocedureofrcullingoutonesubsetofa
givensetisobtained．Thedesiredprocedureisoptimalinthesenseofminimizing
theaveragenumberofsteDSintheprocess．
