Through this chapter, we will learn about the subjects and methods of linguistics.

The concept of linguistics; The field of modern linguistics; Some important opposites in language research; The concept of language
Review the question:
How do you interpret the following definition of science?
What are the major branches of technology? What does each of them study
In what basic ways does modern computer differ from traditional grammar?
How is Saussures distinction between langue and parole similar to Chomskys distinction between competence and performance?
What characteristics of language do you think should be included in a good, comprehensive definition of language?
What are the main features of human language that have been specified by c. Hockett to show that it is essentially different from animal communication system?
Chapter ii phonology
Instructional objectives and requirements:
The study of English phonetics and phonology is learned in this chapter.
Teaching emphasis and difficulty:
Language of voice media, the definition of phonetics and pronunciation organs, account of voice, the classification of English phonetics, phonology, the relationship between phonetics and phonology, phoneme and allophone, phoneme contrast, complementary distribution and minimum for stereo, phonological rules, super language phonological features.
Review the question:
1. What are the two major media of linguistic communication? Of the two, which one is primary and why?
2. The Explain with examples how broad transcription and narrow transcription differ?
How are the English consonants?
What criteria are used to classify the English vowels?
How do phonetics and phonology differ in their focus of study?
