As the Nobel Laureate in 1925, he is recognized as much for his wit and eccentric personality as for his writings. Scholars both at home and abroad have done much research on George Bernard Shaw and his works from different angles. Saint Joan is one of their focuses. They have paid attention to approaches such as feminism, creative evolution, moral vision and so on, while the investigation of biblical archetypes of the play has been pushed aside. As a play with strong religious color, a lot of biblical archetypes are easy to be found in it. Based on the theory of archetypal criticism, the author plans to analyze biblical archetypes from characters, imagery and narrative structure, then reveals the close relationship among the Holy Bible, Shaw’s works, and his thoughts, thus verifies Shaw’s paradoxical attitude to Christianity. The thesis has 3 parts: Introduction, Body and Conclusion. The Introduction briefly introduces the background ，the questions and the significance of this thesis. Shaw’s ideas have inclusiveness and contradictoriness. Although he declares atheism, his ideas and works have vaguely revealed the influence of Christianity. Many scholars think that Saint Joan makes great contributions to Shaw’s Nobel Prize for his successful application of the biblical archetypes in the play. The body includes 4 chapters. It mainly introduces internal and external studies on Shaw’s Plays and points out that the researches have involved almost all Shaw’s ideas except for biblical influence. I
