Abstract Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832), who is not only the deputation of the classical literature and national literature, but also is a famous writer who was well-know for the Chinese readers. During the May Fourth Movement, these were an agitation of the study on Goethe. Many famous scholars praised highly on Goethe. Except the Guo Moruo who translated many important works of Goethe, the other one is Zong Baihua. Zong Baihua(1897-1986), as the one of the most important Chinese aesthetician in 20 century, and Zhu Guangqian are called 〝the doublet of the aesthetics〞. They are the second generation of Chinese aesthetician who after Wang Guowei and Cai Yuanpei. Zong Baihua knows the classical literature well, and embraced new thoughts of the May Fourth Movement. He explores the aesthetics in his poetic insight, and describes the experience of aesthetics by his poetic language. His aesthetic idea takes root in the fat soil of Chinese traditional culture and absorbs quintessence of the western culture. The experience of overseas study has offered him some new cultural insights. He understands the philosophy and aesthetics in Germany from the Kant, Schopenhauer and Bergson. And it is helpful for his study in future. As the one of the most important scholars of Goethe ’s translation, he knows Goethe’s personality and life well, and has a specific feeling of him. He translates “On Goethe” and thought that Goethe is a whole person. He writes series of article about Goethe on his one hundred years death day. He studies Goethe’s personality, life and works, and praises highly about Goethe’s model action for the people.
