Introduction to Chinese Culture Sophia English Department Harbin Medical University Chapter I The Basic Spirit of Chinese Culture 中国文化的基本精神 From Wikipedia Chinese culture?(simplified Chinese:?中国文化;?traditional Chinese:?中國文化;?pinyin:?Zhōngguó wénhuà) is one of the worlds oldest cultures, dating thousands of years old. The area in which the culture is dominant covers a large geographical region in?eastern Asia?with customs and traditions varying greatly between?provinces, cities, and even towns as well. Important components of Chinese culture includes?ceramics,?architecture,?music,?literature,? martial arts,?cuisine,?visual arts,?philosophyand?religion. There are 56 officially recognized?ethnic groups in China. In terms of numbers however,?Han Chinese?is by far the largest group. Throughout history, many groups have merged into neighboring ethnicities or disappeared. At the same time, many within the Han identity have maintained distinct linguistic and regional cultural traditions. The term?Zhonghua Minzu?has been used to describe the notion of?Chinese nationalism?in general.?Much of the traditional identity within the community has to do with distinguishing the?family name. Chapter I After thousand of years’ development, Chinese culture has evolved and gradually formed its own unique spirit, namely, the basic spirit of Chinese culture, which is the reflection of basic styles and features of the ethos of a specific value system, ways of thinking, social psychology, ethics, moral sentiment and aesthetic taste of the Chinese nation, which refers to the ideas or inherent tradition people praise highly and has become the highest guiding principle for people’s life and action. The outstanding ingredients of the basic spirit of Chinese culture have constituted the spirit of the Chinese nation and become the power to promote the progress of the Chinese nation.
