Definition of idiom; 2. Sources of English Idioms; 3.Classification of idioms; 4. English idioms borrowed from China 教学难点: The above-mentioned. * Lecture 7 English Idioms The English language abounds (riches) in idioms like other highly developed tongues (languages). Idioms consist of set phrases and short sentences, or rather (more exactly speaking), idioms are set phrases of fixed meanings. But in a broad sense, idioms may include colloquialisms, catchphrases, slang expressions, proverbs, etc. They form an important part of the English vocabulary. This lecture will deal with idioms in terms of their characteristics, classification and uses. * 1. Definition of idiom An English idiom is a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words (New Oxford Dictionary of English, 1998) An idiom is an expression which functions as a single unit and whose meaning cannot be worked out from its separate parts (Longman Dictionary of Applied Linguistics,1985) * 2. Characteristics of Idioms (1). Semantic Unity (语义的整体性) Exactly speaking, being phrases or sentences, idioms each consists of more than one word, but each is a semantic unity. Though various words which make up the idiom have their respective literal meanings, in the idiom they have lost their individual identity, i.e. their meanings are not often recognizable in the meaning of the whole idiom. * Lecture 7 English Idioms ① Quite often an idiom functions as one word. For instance, till the cows come home, which comprises a conjunction till, an article the, a noun cow, a verb come, an adverb home, means ‘fore
