Mutually Orthogonal Latin Squares A Brief Survey of Constructions Charles J Colb ourn Jerey H Dinitz January In Honour of S S Shrikhande Com binatorial Pioneer Abstract In the two centuries since Euler rst asked ab out mutually orthogonal latin squares substantial progress has b een made The biggest breakthroughs came in with the celebrated theorems of Bose Shrikhande and Parker and in in the research of Wilson Current eorts have concentrated on rening these approaches and nding new applications of the substantial theory op ened This pap er provides a detailed list of constructions for MOLS concentrating on the uses of pairwise balanced designs and transversal designs in recursive constructions as pioneered in the pap ers of Bose Shrikhande and Parker In addition several new lower b ounds for MOLS are given and an uptodate table of lower b ounds for MOLS is provided An Historical Intro duction In Euler b egan a study of a simple mathematical puzzle the Ocers Problem Thirtysix ocers drawn from six dierent ranks and six dierent regiments one of each rank from each regiment are to b e arranged in a square so that in each horizontal and vertical line there are six ocers from each rank and each regiment Recording just the ranks of the ocers the square obtained is a latin square Recording just the regiments it is again a latin square But the two latin squares have the prop erty that when sup erimp osed every ordered pair o ccurs exactly once Thus the squares are orthogonal A set of latin squares L L is mutual ly orthogonal or a set of MOLS if for every i j m L
