When a group of 34 Chinese had dinner in a Thai restaurant in July, 2011, one of the guests gave a small gift to a local boy who was running around the dining tables, and also he touched the boy’s head to show his affection to this lovely kid. However, in Thailand, a notable social norm holds that the head is considered sacred and touching someone on the head is regarded as an insult. Thai’s head, especially young kid’s, is never allowed to touch. The child parents’ face got clouded instantly as soon as it happened but they managed to keep themselves under control. Worse than bad, the guest was not aware of his improper manners yet, later he again patted the kid on his head while he gave some candies to him. This time the boys parents could not restrain themselves anymore and shouted to the Chinese tourists in the act. The guest felt particularly embarrassed that he voiced a complaint to the travel agency for that such poor case was resulting from the tour leader who was failing to do his duty to inform of the customs and taboos of the destination country in advance, which led to the suffering of the humiliation.?? What can we learn from the case? Apparently, the tourist had not been informed of the taboos of touching other’s head in Thailand. Informing the tourists about the customs and taboos of destination is a significant task for tour leader before departure. The tour leader should make sure the tourists are aware of the dos and don’ts during a trip. The tour leader should keep an eye on the tourists in case of any emergencies.
