TEACHING VOCABULARY 郭毅欣(主讲)田晓兰 张蓉 汪叶萍 Vocabulary and vocabulary learning 1. What are the most common ways for Chinese students to learn vocabulary regarding English? 2. Similarly, what are the most common ways for Chinese teachers to teach English vocabulary, in primary school, secondary school and university? 3.What are some of the vocabulary learning strategies you have used and found useful or effective? What are some of the ways that you have used but found not very useful or effective? What does knowing a word involve? A simple answer to this question would be: 1) knowing a word means knowing its pronunciation and stress, 2) knowing a word means knowing its spelling and grammatical properties, 3) knowing a word means knowing its meaning, 4) knowing a word means knowing how and when to use it to express the intended meaning (socio-linguistic competence) What does knowing a word involve? In addition, there are multi-word units such as phrasal verbs (give up, put up), compound words like ”greenhouse”, “babysitter” as well as idioms and metaphors. What does knowing a word involve? Vocabulary learning involves at least two aspects of meaning. The first aspect involves the understanding of its denotative and connotative meaning. The second aspect involves understanding the sense relations amo
