Personal reference in English political speeches
;Political speech is quite different from other genre, and it has the features of its own, among which persuasiveness is the most important. To fulfill this purpose, the speaker must use every expression carefully. In this part, we will use a political speech to analyze personal reference for the purpose of finding out the special usage of personal reference.
;Obama’s Speech
In the United States, on January 20, 2009, Barack Obama officially sworn in as the 56th U.S. (44th) President delivered the inaugural address. Obamas inaugural speech is enthusiastic, impassioned and inspiring. It was highly praised by the media at home and abroad. Obama deftly use various personal pronouns to convey different interpersonal meaning, making his speech fascinating, more convincing, thus winning the support of the audience.
;Personal pronouns;Ⅰ. The first-person pronoun
First-person pronouns, including a first person singular “I” and the first person plural “we”.
①A first-person pronoun-singular “I”
A first-person singular “I” revealed his strong subjective attitude. It appears only five times in Obamas inaugural speech, only 2% of the speech. Obama rarely uses “I” as the subject of the sentence, unless he wants to emphasize his personal point of view or he wants to assume full responsibility for the statements he made.
I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.
“I” was used to show the personality of the speaker and his subjective attitude.
;②A first-person pronoun-plural “we”
The number of “we” (including its accusative and possessive) accounts for 65.7%. As president, Obama must cooperate with his government and the National Peoples need. Obama skillfully use a variety of “we” to refer to a
