To date smart home solutions have focused on professional home security or home automation applications that cater
for a relatively limited customer segment. If service providers wish to appeal to the mass market, they need to develop
smart home solutions that meet the needs of the wider population. 智能家居解决方案迄今为止主要集中在迎合相对有

Cost remains a fundamental barrier to the development of the smart home. To reduce upfront costs it is tempting for
providers to try to “dumb down” high-end solutions in the hope that they are then more attractive to the wider market.
However, this tends to reduce the value of the service without resulting in a product that actually meets users’ needs.
