Cognitive Ultra-Wideband Radio Evolution for
Innovative and Dynamic Spectrum Access
Networks
By HONGGANG ZHANG
What has Happened Recently?
Cognitive Radio Ultra-Wideband
“A gathering (UWB)
storm” ? “Pandora’s box” ?
“ The Next Horizon” ?
Cognitive Radio has been recently hailed to be the
“Next Big Thing” in future wireless communications
Uniqueness of Cognitive Radio is its ability to make
efficient use of resource-limited spectrum
environments, based on automatically adapting to a
wireless channel and network environment
Cognitive Radio is suitable for radio nodes
collaboration to share spectrum and can be applied
to realize autonomous, spectrum-agile radios with
adaptive wireless networking
What’s Cognitive Radio?
IEEE (/forum/POSITIONS/cognitiveradio.html):
“ A Cognitive Radio is a radio frequency transmitter/receiver that is
designed to intelligently detect whether a particular segment of the radio
spectrum is currently in use, and to jump into (and out of, as necessary)
the temporarily-unused spectrum very rapidly, without interfering with the
transmissions of other authorized users.”
FCC (FCC NPRM, Dec 17, 2003, ET-03-108):
“ A cognitive radio (CR) is a radio that can change its transmitter parameters
based on interaction with the environment in which it operates. This
interaction may involve active negotiation or communications with other
spectrum users and/or passive sensing and decision making within the radio.”
