The origins of this approach began with the work of British applied linguists in the 1920s and 1930s.Two of the most important figures of the approach were Harold Palmer and A.S Hornby. Developed and used in Britain during the 1930s-1960s

The theory of language underlying Situational Language Teaching can be characterized as a type of British “structuralism.”(英式结构主义) Speech was regarded as the basis of language, and structure was viewed as being at the heart of speaking ability.

Theory of learning
The theory of learning underlying Situational Language Teaching is a type of behaviorist habit-learning theory. It addresses primarily the processes rather than the conditions of learning.
Features
Teaching begins with oral language.
Target language is the medium.
New language items are taught situationally.
Service vocabulary is covered.
Grammatical items are graded and taught from simple to complex ones.
Reading and writing are introduced on the basis of sufficient vocabulary and grammar.
JEAN: Wheres Sally, Jack? JACK: Shes in the garden, Jean. JEAN: Whats she doing? JACK: Shes sitting under the tree. JEAN: Is Tim in the garden, too? JACK: Yes, he is. Hes climbing the tree.
