* Western Classical Thought and Culture 1. Introduction * 1. Course Description This course will be a general survey of ancient thought and culture in Greek and Roman World. The concept of Western thought and culture roughly encompasses the poetic, medical, legal, scientific, philosophical, and theological literature of classical world. The figures and schools we shall be discussing will be Homer, the naturalist movement, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, the Epicureans, and the early Christianity. No preliminary knowledge is required. * 2. Objectives In this course, students are expected to: Acquire a basic knowledge of classical western thinkers and their historical backgound. Become acquainted with basic themes that classical thinkers concerned. Gain an understanding of their importance to the later history of western civilization. William F.
