* Change can benefit individuals and organisations if managed effectively. Change may effect resources, workloads, efficiencies both good and bad. It is when Change is not effectively managed that it causes us the most problems. Ask the audience of where change has resulted in a safer or easier workplace eg bottom loading, automated drum filling, contract Hauliers? Remind the audience that change occurs every day in our life and believe it or not we manage it very successfully because we go home safely every night and in business sense we still have a job. Ask the audience where change has resulted in inefficiencies or injuries. Consider issues such as shortcuts taken, procedures not followed, injuries occurring. * We have raised your knowledge of what change is but how do we manage change effectively? Firstly, we need to identify how a change in the workplace will impact on the hazards and risks of the facility or operation. Currently Shell does have a Change Proposal and Notification system. Presenter to hold up the sheet and ask who has seen or used this process? It has been identified that the process is not rigorously used and this is the reason for this training course and the introduction of a revised process. Once we have identified the changes, the effective management of change requires us to assess these changes and review what effect they may have on existing operations. Once those effects can be identified, controls can be initiated to eliminate or manage the risks. A control can be procedural such as instituting a procedural change in the workplace. Or the control maybe “Do we need to initiate the Change as the risks cannot be reduced to as low as reasonably practicable. Once the controls have been identified, they need to be implemented. A review of incidents has shown that we do not always implement the controls. Finally we need to review the Changes made and the controls implemented to ensure that hazards and the risks are not increased. We then
