Quanz hou H osp ital of T CM Fuj ian Q uanz hou, 362000) Abstract Objective T o evaluate the merits and shortcomin s of Harrin ton rod for the treatment of unstable thoracolumbar vertebra fracture and to discuss the points of attention of t he method. Methods 87 cases were treated with Harrin ton rod. Laminectomy and/ or explorat ion of the spinal cord were performed in 62 cases. Bilateral rods were fixed w ith the wire t hrou h spinal processes in 25 cases. Auto raft of bone were performed in 65 cases. Results 48 cases were followed up from 1 to 5 years after operation. The avera e fol lowup w as 5 years and 4 mont hs. 22 cases recovered completely, and some various complications occurred in 14 cases. Conclusion Harrin ton rod is an effective internal fixation device for the reduction of fracture and dis location of vertebra w ith its lon itudinal stress. This device corresponds to the biomechanics of the spinal col umn. But durin the operation, complications should be avoided or diminished by performin strict aseptic tech nique, bendin of the rod to a proper physiolo ical curvature w hich corresponds to injured spine, doin posterior bone raftin and usin corset support after operation.
