It is a movement of people from the settled regions of the United States to lands further west. Between the early 17th and late 19th centuries, Anglo-American peoples and their societies expanded from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Coast. This west ward movement, across what was often called the American frontier, was of enormous significance. Reasons: large population,(1820s, between 1815 and 1830) California gold rush(1840s) Cheap, fertile land(farmers,land speculation) Freedom for runaway slaves(western territories) Governmental support European settlements along the Atlantic Coast of North American(the early 1600s) It continued until the late 1800s in the early 19th century In 1803 , American government bought the Louisiana from French From the early age of 19th century,the immigrants move to the west to Mississippi River By the mid-1840sadventurous pioneers had reached what are now California and Oregon in the Far West. The settlements of that region began in the 1860s. In 1862 ,Lincoin promulgated the homestead law and made the westward movement reach the peak. By expanding the nations borders to include more than three million square miles , the United States become one of the most powerful countries of the 20th century . However this expanison also resulted in great suffering ,destruction ,and cultural loss for the Native Americans. Economy Between 1880 and 1890, almost 40 percent of the town ships in the United States lost population because of migration. Between 1880 and 1900, cities in the United States grew at a dramatic rate. Owing most of their population growth to the expansion of industry. Industrial expansion and population growth radically changed the face of the nations cities. Noise, traffic jams, slums, air pollution, and sanitation and health problems became commonplace.
