Cavalier Poets Ben Johnson Presented by 黄妙璇 2010071147 Cavalier Cavalier Poetry gets its name from the supporters of King Charles I in the 17th century who were at that period called the Cavaliers; they were royalists during the Civil Wars. Cavalier poets were often squires(乡绅) and courtiers. (a person who is often in attendance at the court of a king or other royal personage ) Characteristics of Cavalier Most Cavalier works had classical references. They were highly influenced by the classical Greek and Roman style. Cavalier poetries are marked by courtliness恳挚谦恭 , urbanity and polish. Their main themes are honor, love and “carpe diem”. (Latin phrase, seize the day) Note: This phrase was popularized by ancient Roman poet Horace and encourages people to make the most out of every moment. Cavalier poetry is filled with direct language and clear-cut expressions. Cavalier poetry reflected the extravagance and moral looseness of court life. Cavalier verse was frequently written in imitation of Ben Johnson’s classical style. They called themselves “sons of Ben Johnson”. Ben Jonson Ben Jonson (1572-1637) was a celebrated playwright and poet of the Shakespearean age. He was chiefly known as a dramatist, famous for his Comedies of Humors, in which each character represents a particular humor. As a poet, he was the representative of Cavaliers. His masques假面剧 were written for court entertainments. The scripts for music, dancing and spectacle(公开展示) are sometimes interspersed with beautiful little songs like the famous ‘To Celia’ To Celia Drink to me only with thine eyes, And I will pledge with mine; Or leave a kiss but in the cup, And I’ll not look for wine.
