In ancient China, marriage is of great significance both to families and to society as well as being fundamental to the cultivation（培养） of virtue（美德）. Brief Introduction Chinese marriage came into being a custom between 402-221 BC. Despite China’s long history and a great many of different geographical areas, there are basically six rituals(老规矩), generally known as the three letters and six etiquette (三书六礼). Three Letters(三书) The marriage is derived from a series of three letters. Letter of Request(聘书): It is from the grooms family to the brides family, and formally requests a marriage. Letter of Gift(礼书): It accompanies the gifts of the grooms family to the brides family shortly before the wedding. Letter of Wedding(迎亲书): It is given on the day of the wedding,officially accepting the bride into the grooms family. Six Etiquette(六礼) Proposal(纳彩) Birthdates(问名) Bride price (Betrothal gifts)(纳吉) Wedding gifts(纳征) Arranging the wedding(请期) Wedding ceremony(亲迎) Proposal(纳彩) When an unmarried boys parents find a potential daughter-in-law,they then located a matchmaker (媒人）whose job was to assuage(缓和) the conflict of interests and general embarrassments on the part of two families. Birthdates(问名) If the potential daughter-in-law‘s family did not object to the proposal, the matchmaker would then compare the couples’ birthdates. If according to Chinese astrology (占星术)the couple is compatible(相处和睦的) ，they would then proceed to the next step. Bride price (Betrothal gifts)(纳吉) At this point the bridegrooms family arranges for the matchmaker to present bride price (betrothal订婚 gifts), including the betrothal letter, to the bride
