II Early British history Early British history refers to the period from the coming of the Iberians to the establishment of the first House in England, the House of Normandy. Learning Focus: Early Settlement The Roman Occupation Anglo-Saxon Times The Invasion of the Vikings and Danish Rule The Norman Conquest and Its Consequences 1.Early Settlement 1.1 Iberians The earliest settlers on the British Isles were the Iberians, who came from the Iberian Peninsula between 3 000 and 2000 B.C. What they left were only stone monuments, the biggest of which was the Stonehenge. 1.2. The Celts From 750 B.C., Celts came from the Upper Rhineland and began to inhabit British Isles. The Celts, like the Iberians before them, remained tribesmen or clansmen. Rhineland refers to the west bank of Rhine. The first: Gaels, whose language is still spoken in Scotland.(750B.C) The second: Britons, from whom Welsh are mainly descended.(500B.C.) The third: Gaul (100B.C.) 2.The Roman Occupation In 55 and 54 B.C., Britain was twice invaded by Romans troops under Julius Caesar. It was Conquered by the Romans under Claudius in 43 A.D.. Britain then became a Roman province and so it remained until the beginning of the 5th century. Romans built roads, walls and garrisons and villas for military purposes in Britain. In 410 A.D., the Roman troops went back to the continent, leaving behind them Welsh Christianity, the roman roads and cities, especially London. He played a critical role in the gradual transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. 2.1 Roman’s influence on Britain.
