Fossil fuels give us energy by burning carbon Each molecule of carbon (atomic weight of 12) combines with two of molecules of oxygen (atomic weight 16 x 2) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) (atomic weight = 44) You will read about both: Carbon reductions and ‘reducing C02 emissions’ Carbon footprints usually refer to CO2 or CO2e but they might quote Carbon to sound smaller!
