Lecture 2 The global context 全球环境概要1
Contemporary Management Lecture 2 The Global Context Dr Sarah Williams Learning Outcomes To have an awareness of climate change as an example of a sustainability issue affecting business To consider why and how climate change is an issue for business And to start thinking about the benefits of improved / changing business practices Climate change as an issue Uncovering ( addressing) the great climate change assumptions Acknowledging climate change as a mutating social idea It’s not just about ‘if’ I believe but ‘how’… Managing for uncertainty unpredictability The great climate change assumptions That we all believe climate change is happening That we all believe human activities are causing it That we all believe ‘doing our bit’ will make a difference That we all understand the science bit Global Carbon Cycle Global warming is not the same as climate change The Earth is big but interconnected The Human Role in Climate Change CO2 = Greenhouse Gas without which temp -18oC Global warming natural but being ‘forced’ by human activity Burning fossil fuel releases ‘fossil’ carbon Carbon + oxygen in the atmosphere = Carbon Dioxide (CO2) ** Green things breath in CO2 / breath out oxygen Nature in balance – ‘carbon cycle’ Average global temperature = 15oC increase of + 2oC…. 4 oC….. ? Increased warming means more energy in system: Higher frequency, more intense weather extremes And climate change… ** Carbon or CO2 ? Fossil fuels give us energy by burning carbon Each molecule of carbon (atomic weight of 12) combines with two of molecules of oxygen (atomic weight 16 x 2) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) (atomic weight = 44) You will read about both: Carbon reductions and ‘reducing C02 emissions’ Carbon footprints usually refer to CO2 or CO2e but they might quote Carbon to sound smaller! Talk about ‘reducing carbon’ or ‘reducing CO2 emissions’ usually means ‘reducing greenhouse gases’ CO2 not the only GHG with GWP! Emission Chemical formula Amount Emit
