ABSTRACT: The stability of excavation face has been a key to shield tunnel construction. Based on silo theory, a calculation model of limit support force in facing-slope construction was put forward through limit equilibrium analysis method, and track gradient was introduced, also the corresponding formulas were obtained by theoretical derivation. As a current engineering project was analyzed as an example, the result indicates that this method is reliable. Furthermore, the limit support forces to different track gradients were calculated for discussing the impact of them. The main conclusions are as follows: the limit support force of excavation face increases largely and linearly with track gradient increasing; but the break angle of soil in front of excavation face decreased linearly with track gradient increasing, and the sum of them can be viewed as a constant. It is thus evident that the existence of track gradient has significant effect on limit support force, and it should be fully taken into account during design and construction process.
