In the early 20th century in the United States, slavery covered the whole country like a dome. Black slaves suffered harshly from hunger and maltreatment. The slave trafficking was prevailing then in Europe and America. He helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's(the leader of Indian nationalism in British-ruled India) success with non-violent activism, King had for a long time wanted to take a trip to India.
