Under new conditions transformers typically have less than 1%, a 30 years old transformer has typically 2,5%. According to IEC60422 a moisture content of more than around 2,2% is classified as moderately wet, more than 3,7% as wet. Water causes three dangerous effects: 1. dielectric strength of oil and of paper decreases Diagram shows how the breakdown voltage in mineral oil decreases with increasing moisture saturation. It also depends on the total acid number TAN. 2. Depolymerization: Cellulose molecules get splitted into smaller parts. Degree of polymerization decreases from 1200 to 200, which is considered to be the end of life criterion. Degree of polymerization gives the number of joined glucose rings per cellulose molecule. The more, the higher the mechanical strength. Water accelerates aging together with temperature by a chemical reaction called hydrolysis. The glucosidic bond between two glucose rings gets broken. Low molecular carboxylic acids (e.g. acetic) from paper and oil aging play the role of a catalyst that degradation process. * * IEC60422 classifies transformers using the relative saturation of the oil. This is roughly in equilibrium with the relative saturation of the solid insulation. DIRANA provides the moisture content of the solid insulation.
