A study of Wuthering Heights from the Relationship between Nature and Material Civilization
Abstract: Wuthering Heights is the masterpiece of Emily Bronte,a British female writer in the 19th century . This story is acclaimed as ‘the most extraordinary novel ’in the history of British literature. With the love between Heathcliff and Catherine as its main leading trace ,with the huge gap between the rich and the poor and the decadent social morality brought by the prosperously developed economy in the Victoria period as its social background ,this story depicts the struggle between the material society and the nature of love. Based on the influence exerted by Emily‘s passion for wasteland and her nature for freedom on the novel, the writing order of this thesis is that of “possessing nature, losing nature, vengeance from nature and returning to nature”. This thesis consists of three parts including the introduction, the main body and the conclusion. The introduction is a brief introduction to Emily’s peculiar life and its influence on the creating of Wuthering Heights as well as the main idea of the thesis “to return to the nature after betray to the society”. The main body of this thesis includes four aspects. The first aspect is to discuss the pure love between Heathcliff and Catherine which is based on common nature. The second aspect is to analyze the love tragedy caused by Catherine’s betraying her nature and pursuing material civilization. The third aspect is to discuss Heathcliff’s revenge exhibiting the distorted humanity caused by Catherine’s betrayal. The fourth aspect is to explore the return to nature as a remedy for the irrational desire for mat
