* * 1882-1941 James Augustine Aloysius Joyce?(2 February 1882 – 13 January 1941) was an?Irish?novelist?and?poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the?modernist?avant-garde?of the early 20th century. Joyce is best known for?Ulysses?(1922), a landmark work in which the episodes of?Homers?Odyssey?are paralleled in an array of contrasting literary styles, perhaps most prominently the?stream of consciousness?technique he perfected. Other major works are the short-story collection?Dubliners?(1914), and the novels?A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man?(1916) and?Finnegans Wake?(1939). In 1907 Joyce published a collection of poems, CHAMBER MUSIC. In 1916 appeared a portrait of the artist as a young man, and autobiographical novel. At the outset of the first world war, Joyce moved his family to Zurich, where Joyce started to develop the early chapters of Ulysses. Joyce’s most famous novel, Ulysses, was published in Paris in 1922. In the same year he started work on his last great book, Finnnegans wake, which was published in 1939. Stream of consciousness The term “Stream of Consciousness” was taken from the book?Principles of Psychology. Stream-of-consciousness writing is usually regarded as a special form of interior monologue(独白)?and is characterized by associative leaps in syntax and punctuation that can make the?prose(散文)?difficult to follow. Stream of consciousness?is the continuous flow of sense‐perceptions, thoughts, feelings, and memories in the human mind or a literary method of representing a blending of mental processes in?fictional?c
