How to Write a Summary For the Medical English Course How to Write a Summary A summary is a brief statement of the main points as in a report or an article. It’s a synopsis, a short account of something longer, such as an outline of a story or an article. How to Write a Summary The summary captures all the important parts of the original, but expresses them in much shorter space. A good summary is brief, complete and objective. Find the author’s main idea and subordinating ideas and show your clear understanding of the structure. How to Write a Summary A few relevant points you should heed 1. Take a few minutes to preview the article by briefly looking at the following: Title: A title often summarizes what an article is about. Think about the title and how it may condense the meaning of the article. How to Write a Summary Subheadlings: Subheadings, if given, often provide a quick insight into the meaning of the parts of the article under them. First and last few paragraphs. In the first few paragraphs, the author may introduce you to the subject and state the purpose of the article. In the last few paragraphs, the writer may present conclusions or a summary. How to Write a Summary The previews and summaries can give you a quick overview of what the entire article is about. 2. Write the summary in your own words. Do not imitate the style of the original work. 3. Quote from the material only to illustrate key points. Also, limit your quotations.
