Lesson 2 Cathedral (1983) Raymond Carver cathedral A cathedral (Lat. cathedra, seat) is a Christian church that contains the seat of a bishop. It is a religious building for worship. Carver is considered a major American writer of the late 20th century and also a major force in the revitalization of the short story in the 1980s. Life 1. Born in Clatskanie, Oregon, on May 25, 1938, to laborer Clevie Raymond Carver and home-maker Ella Beatrice Carver. 2. Grew up in the working-class town of Yakima, Washington and drew on his experiences in the Pacific Northwest as settings for his stories. 3. Worked low-paying jobs to support the family while managed to take enough classes to graduate from Humboldt State University in 1963. Life 4. Briefly attended the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and moved to Sacramento to be a hospital custodian and began writing seriously and publishing his stories. 5. Suffered personal turmoil in 1967 while successfully published his stories and was offered a teaching position at college. 6. Became a slave to drink, separated with his wife and underwent repeated hospitalizations for alcoholism. Life 7. Lived together with poet Tess Gallagher in 1979 and brought drinking under control, divorce his wife in 1983. 8. Began battling cancer in 1987,married Gallagher in June, 1988, and died at their home in Port Angeles, Washington, on August 2, 1988.
