Animal behaviour They are born knowing how to identify food. The alternation makes them migrate at the right time. They are programmed to build nests. Script Interviewer: The more we discover about the behaviour of birds, the more impressive it seems. But do they learn what to do, or is it somehow in their genes? Here in the radio is animal behaviour specialist Jenny Johnson to tell us. Jenny. Jenny: Thank you. Much of what birds know is innate, or instinctive, programmed into their genes. They’re born knowing how to identify food—and remember that what one species eats may be poisonous to another, so it’s important to get it right. In the spring, when the days grow longer, the increased light alters hormone levels in birds’ blood, triggering several essential changes in behaviour. For one thing, the alteration makes them migrate at the right time, so that they reach their nesting sites at the right time for the next stage in their life cycle. They’re also programmed to build nests, with different species producing very different styles of nests. So these are things that birds are programmed to do at certain times.
