If so, give the reasons and what messages can silence convey? As far as you are concerned, what differences do silence mean between western and eastern culture? What is the different opinion toward silence in Western and Eastern culture? Silence is a form of nonverbal communication that may be interpreted in various ways depending upon the situation, the duration of the silence, and the culture. The use of silence in communication is also important. Silence can communicate agreement, apathy (冷漠), awe (敬畏), confusion, contemplation (沉思), disagreement, embarrassment, obligation, regret, repressed hostility, respect, sadness, thoughtfulness, or any number of meanings. * * Case 1 An American scholar went to China and gave a lecture in a famous university. After the lecture, the Chinese audience gave him thunderous applause. But when he asked the audience whether they had any question to ask about the lecture, silence prevailed. The scholar became very uneasy and annoyed. * Silence (paralanguage) Even when you don’t say anything, you’re still transmitting some information.
