四级辅导之快速阅读 --词汇学习、阅读理解与应试技巧 2 techniques to help you expand your vocabulary Context: When you come across an unfamiliar word in your reading, the first step you should take toward finding its meaning is to look for context clues:e.g. Imagine Sue’s chagrin when she realized that all of the other women at the office party were wearing long dresses and she was wearing shorts. 2 techniques to help you expand your vocabulary Structure: Word structure gives you a way to discover the meaning of a word by breaking it down into its parts. Knowing the meaning of the word parts should help you decipher the word’s meaning:e.g. Synchronized diving is a new Olympic sport that requires tremendous precision. Syn-: same; chrono: time Context clues Definition: Sometimes a writer simply provides us with a definition of a word somewhere within the sentence.e.g. A thesaurus, or dictionary that lists synonyms, antonyms, and other related words, can help you express your ideas more clearly and effectively. Context clues Synonym: A synonym, which is another word with a similar meaning, maybe used elsewhere in the sentence.e.g. Four types of objects revolve around the sun; however, the planets are the largest objects that circle our fiery star. Context clues Antonym: Sometimes you can determine the meaning of a word by finding an antonym, a word within opposite meaning, somewhere in the sentence.e.g. Gustavo was a very skillful soccer player, but Pedro was inept.
