The author Maya Angelou presented the answer by the title of her essay “New Directions”: When in a dilemma, find a new direction and keep going forward. To make a living after her divorce, Annie seemed to be faced with only one choice—to be a domestic, because it was impossible for a Negro woman to be hired at the town’s cotton gin or lumber mill. Since being a domestic means leaving “her precious babes to anyone else’s care”, which was against Annie’s will, she decided to find a new direction—to start her own business of cooking and selling meat pies to the workers in the two factories.Before cutting the“new path” for herself, I noticed that Annie was doing some self-evaluation when she told herself “she could mix groceries well enough to scare hunger away and from starving a man”. This indicates that self-knowledge is a priority when looking for a new way. To assess herself, Annie must have asked herself questions like “What am I good at?”, “What can be possibly achieved?”, or “What might be wishful thinking?”In addition to her wonderful self-knowledge, I was also awed by her ability to explore the external environment and find out the potential opportunities for her.
