Accelerated Career Enhancement (ACE) Program: A New Concept in TESOL Education Faculty Staff Meeting: February 22, 2003 A Little About Me OVERVIEW The Need for ESOL Expertise—Rising Statistics A Little About the Class of 2003 LEP Enrollment, 1995-2002:Caroline County LEP Enrollment, 1995-2002:Dorchester County LEP Enrollment, 1995-2002:Somerset County LEP Enrollment, 1995-2002:Talbot County LEP Enrollment, 1995-2002:Wicomico County LEP Enrollment, 1995-2002 (Actual Numbers) LEP Student Enrollment, 1995-2002 Percentage Increase of LEP Students, 1995-2002 LEP Enrollment, 1995-2002: Percentage Increase Our five counties combined: 62.2% All other Maryland counties combined: 47.5% Total increase for Maryland: 47.8% Our numbers aren’t as high as many counties, but our LEP enrollments are growing at a rate of 14.4% over the state as a whole! Outlook for Maryland Education “The imperative to accelerate minority achievement grows with each school year, as Maryland will soon have a non-Caucasian majority in its public schools.” Source: Maryland 2001 State of Education Report (MSDE website) According to the Maryland Teacher Staffing Report, 2002-2004: For 2002-2003, Maryland public schools projected a need to hire 155 teachers certified in ESOL; however, they’re projected to hire only 110 (71% of need). As a result, ESOL is once again listed as a “critical shortage area” in Maryland. Class of 2003: Years Teaching Experience Grades Represented Almost every grade is represented from kindergarten through high school. Content areas include elementary education, language arts, Spanish, special education, English, Latin, math, and literacy. Schools Represented Certification?
