Focuses English Literature in the Renaissance Period (3) Sonnet 18 English Literature in the 17th Century (1603-1700) Metaphysical Poets 玄学派诗人 Cavalier Poets 骑士诗人 English Literature in the 18th Century The Enlightenment and Classicism The Rise of the Novel On literary criticism A Shakespearean, or English sonnet consists of 14 lines, each line contains 10 syllables, and each line is written in iambic pentameter in which a pattern of an unemphasized syllable followed by an emphasized syllable is repeated five times. The rhyme scheme in a Shakespearean sonnet is ABAB CDCD EFEF GG in which the last two lines are a rhyming couplet. Sample: Sonnet 18 Sonnet 18 Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all to short a date. Sometimes too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimm’d; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance , or nature’s changing course, untrimm’d: But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st; Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st.
