Abstract: Because of the high pow er of the electric locomotive and large traction currents, the phenomenon of
high rail potentials occurs obviously in heavy haul sections of electric railw ays. T he rise of rail potentials has
bad effects on lifesafety of personnel, line equipment, track signalling circuits and railsleeper insulation. On
the basis of the realtime synchronous testing data of the DatongQinhuangdao Heavy H aul Railw ay, the paper
analyses in detail the formation mechanism, distribution characteristics and influencing factors of rail potentials
of heavy haul railw ays. The decay constant and halftime length are calculated. T he mathematical model of rail
potentials is deduced by the AT short circuit model. The paper builds the models for simulation of the traction
pow er supply system and rail potentials of heavy haul railw ays by use of the general modules provided by
