] :2004 : ] 100037 100871 An Empirical Study on Private Tutoring for Students in Urban China Xue Haiping Ding Xiaohao [Abstract]: This paper analyzes the activity of private tutoring for students in urban China with the data of “Chinese Urban Household Education and Employment Survey (CHUHEES)-2004”. Results show that over half of surveyed students received private tutoring in 2004, and students in the compulsory education were most likely to receive private tutoring. Factors such as family social economic status had significant effect on choice and expenditure of private tutoring. Students who had studied in higher quality schools or had better performances in classes were most likely to attend private tutoring, and their expenditure on private tutoring grew faster. Private tutoring outside of the normal education system in urban areas expanded the inequality of basic education resources, which challenged the goal of basic education equalization.
