Getting Along With Nature Wendell Berry was born in rural Kentucky in 1934,and he received a bachelor’s degree in 1956 and a master’s degree in 1957 from the University of Kentucky .After traveling several years through the United States and Europe ,Berry returned to the University of Kentucky in 1964. Wendell Berry is the author of thirty-two books of essays ,poetry and novels .He is a conservationist ,farmer, and professor of English ,He has worked a farm in Henry County ,Kentucky since 1965,He is a former professor of English at the University of Kentucky and a past fellow of both the Guggenheim Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation. He has received numerous awards for his work ,including an award from the national Institute and Academy or Arts and Letters in 1971 , and most recently ,the T.S .Eliot Award .He now lives on a farm. The Now York Times has called Berry the “prophet of rural American ”,New York Review of Books says Berry is “a Kentucky farmer and writer ,and perhaps the great moral essayist of our day ” and Christian Science Monitor comments ; “Berry is the prophetic American voice of our day ” 2.Introduction to the Text In just the last few hundred years, human activity has had a tremendous impact on the natural world. In Western culture in particular, it has been common to think of nature as something to be conquered, something to be overcome so that humans may prosper. In this essay, Wendell Berry discusses the relationship between mankind and nature, and points out that the situation is more complex than the Western view of man as conqueror would suggest.
