Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July, 1918 in Transkei, South Africa. Rolihlahla Mandela became the first member of his family to attend a school, where his teacher Miss Mdingane gave him the English name Nelson. After enrolling, Mandela began to study for a Bachelor of Arts at the Fort Hare University, where he met Oliver Tambo. Tambo and Mandela became lifelong friends and colleagues. After the 1948 election victory of the Afrikaner- dominated National Party, Mandela began actively participating in politics. Nelson Mandela was elected the first black President in South Africa in 1994. In 1961, he became the President of the African National Congress (ANC). He helped the black people to get the same rights as the white people. He fought for the black people and was in prison for thirty years. Mandelas 90th birthday was marked across the country on 18 July 2008, with the main celebrations held at his home town of Qunu.
