Chinese Literature (I) Unit 5 A brief introduction China has a wealth of classical literature, dating from the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (256-770 BCE) , with a variety of literary forms, including the Classical poetry and proses. Shi Jing (《诗经》: Book of Songs): the first anthology of Chinese poetry in Zhou Dynasty. Chu Ci (《楚辞》: Songs of Chu): made up primarily of poems ascribed to the semi-legendary Qu Yuan (屈原) (ca. 340-278 B.C.) and his follower Song Yu (宋玉). Han Fu (《汉赋》: Peotic Prose of Han Dynasty): a poem usually in rhymed verse except for introductory and concluding passages that are in prose, often in the form of questions and answers. Yue Fu (《乐府》: Folk songs or poems collected by Music Bureau of the government): The term literally means music bureau, a reference to the government organisation originally charged with collecting or writing the lyrics. A brief introduction Tang Poetry (《唐诗》: Poems of Tang Dynasty): refers to poetry written in or about Chinas Tang dynasty, (618 - 907, including the 690-705 reign of Wu Zetian) and/or follows a certain style, often considered as the Golden Age of Chinese poetry. Ci (《宋词》: Poetry of Song Dynasty): A special form of poetry with its lines of irregular lengths. Qu (《元曲》: Poetry of Yuan Dynasty): Another style of poetry created after Song Dynasty. Essay and Novels (散文与小说) 中国文学流变图表 Book of Songs (诗经) The Book of Songs (《诗经》Shī Jīng), translated variously as the Classic of Poetry, or the Book of Odes, is the earliest existing collection of Chinese poems. It comprises 305 poems, some possibly written as early as 1000 BC. It forms part of the Five Classics. The collection is divided into three parts according to their genre, namely feng, ya and song, with the ya genre further divided into small and “great: The three major literary figures or styles employed in the poems are fu (赋), bi(比) and xing(兴): Poems from the Book of Songs 周南 1. 關睢 關關雎鳩, 在河之洲。 窈宨淑女, 君子好逑。 THE ODES OF ZHOU AND THE SOUTH GUAN SUI
