There are two basic components in the development of addictive behavior: primary and secondary motivational effects. In this study, a lickometer was used to examine the primary motivational effects of areca nut extracts in rats. Results show that the volume ingestion of 0, 15 and 30 areca nut extracts extracts increased by day over a period of 30 days. The 30 extracts resulted in a significant increase in intake throughout the experimental period. This result suggests that areca nuts possess primary motivational effects that reinforces the ingestive response of the extract.The conditioned place preference CPP method was used to examine the secondary motivational effects of arecoline in rats. This result suggests that arecoline possess secondary motivational effects. Key words: primary reinforcement s
