组织设计要时尚还是要匹配(上)(Organizational design to fashion or to match) Because the organization has a natural structure, coordination between parts is perhaps the key to the success of the organization. Why has the auto industry taken so long to adapt to the needs of smaller cars? Why does a film producer leave its group and start its own business? Why are so many public hospitals and universities declining in the hands of the government? These questions can be answered in many ways in a variety of ways. But I think one of the common reasons they face is that some elements in the organizational design do not fit in with the tasks they face. The large machine type hierarchy is no better for efficient mass production, but it is difficult to adapt to the rapidly changing new situation. Film production relies on flexible structures to innovate, and a group that runs by profit is hard to innovate. Public hospitals and universities need a specialized control that is incompatible with the governments tendency to impose technical standards of governance. I have found that each organizational form adopted by each organization is a combination of its structure and certain elements of the situation. When managers and organization designers try to mix and match these different elements, they may not be coordinated, just like a poorly tailored dress that wont be too comfortable to wear. Therefore, the key to organizational design is consistency and consistency. Lets take a look at the following example.
