Modeling and Implementation of an Integrated Ramp
Metering- Diamond Interchange Control System

Abstract This pap er addresses a modeling approach to analyzing an integrated system that includes freew ay m a
inlines, ramp metering, and an upstream signalized diamond interch ange. The modeling approach takes into con
sideration of the various component s, their operational characteristics, and their interactions w ithin the system .
Strategies are also proposed f or realtime operation and possible field implementation . The key element of achieving
an integrated operation is to control the ramp feeding traff ic through special signal tim ings at the diamond inter
change. Whenever a long queu e is detected at the m etered ramp, the signal tim ing should be adjusted to reduce the
traff ic flow s entering the ramp. In this w ay, the ramp m eter w ill rem ain in op eration for as long as possible, w hich
would delay the onset of queue flush ( i. e. , term ination of ramp meter) and m inimize the possibilities of a freew ay
breakdown . Because a diamond interchange is usually controlled by special signal phasing and timing, the control
strategies are specially focused on the special diamond signal phasing schem es . The system design and system ar
chitecture are also presented for potential deployment of the system in the field .
