This Chapter provides basic information on the variations in properties that occur, practical steps an engineer can take to control critical properties to acceptable levels of tolerance, and the specific instances when such measures may be appropriate. 8.1 Parent Materials 8.1.1 Steels Designers should specify materials which are readily available for building construction and which will provide suitable ductility and weldability for seismic applications.
