Department of Biology, ChineseUniversity of Hong Kong) Abstract:Contents and toxicity of sediments and porewaterin rivers of HongKongweremeasured and compared.Toxicitybetweensediment and porewater,porewater and overlaying water,porewater under different treatments were compared separately.Elutriate experiment was also con ducted.The results show that sulfide and nonion ammoniawould be themain factors on toxicity of sedimentwhen contents of heavy metals are very low.When ratio of SEM and AVS is below 1,toxicity of sediment shows independencewith theratio of SEMandAVS, and themain factors may beAVS and other organicmaterials in sediment.Elutriate experiment could hid thetrue toxicity of sediment, because it had destroyed the active sulfide.
