The uniqueness of limit cycles is proved under a simple condition, and a necessary and sufficient condition for a limit cycle to exist is obtained. As an application to a codimension two bifurcation in a three dimensional system, the problem on the uniqueness of limit cycles near a heteroclinic loop of the deduced plane system is solved.
