Chi nese J ou rnal of Ecology ,1998 ,17 (3) :16 - 19 . The flux of seed into and out of a unit of habitat determmines t he potential population of t hat habi tat . The process is called seed rain . Based on t he study of sp atialtemporal heterogeneity of seed rain in Picea mongolica population , we found t hat it s seed rain is a sp atial process , t hat is to say , t he seed rain intensity ( SR I) is maximum in t he distance 5 - 10 meters from t he mot her tree and it is difference in different directions. SR I is maximum wit h wind , t hen across wind and finally against wind. Furt hermore , t he seed rain is a temporal process too . The p eriod of seed rain is about two weeks. SR I is maximum in 2 - 5 days and it s sp atial heterogeneity is as former . Based on t he seed characters and disp ersibility of Picea m ongolica , we estimate t hat a single mature tree ( DB H = 50cm , Height = 17m) can produce 1. 6kg seed and 40kg fresh cores.
