Diosmectitie (Smectite?), an adsorbent, is an activated natural aluminosilicate clay.21(/p1/col2/para2) Diosmectite binds to mucosa of GIT and interacts with the mucosal glycoproteins thereby increasing the resistance of mucosal gel to detrimental agents.32(/p1/para4-18) Therapeutic indications include symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhoea along with ORS in infants, children, symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhoea in adults and symptomatic treatment of chronic diarrhoea. For diarrhoea, in children 1 years, the dosage recommended is 2 sachets/day for 3 days and then 1 sachet per day, after 1 year 4 sachets can be used per day for 3 days, then 2 sachets per day. In adults, 3 sachets/day can be used. However, in practice the daily dosage is recommended to be doubled at the beginning of treatment.
