N +N compound s are concise in form but comp licated in m eaning con struction. Traditional app roaches to N + N compounds m ainly focu s on the taxonomy of concep tual b lending p rocesses, w ith little reference to the nonsem antic factors that can contribute to the overall m ean ing of the compounds. A s a resu lt, the currently popu lar western concep tual b lending theories are inadequate in dealing w ith these nonsem antic factors. B esides, in modern Chinese both phonetics and sem antics are crucial and som etim es phonetics outweigh s sem antics in the compounding p rocess of N + N compounds.
