A method to calculate the current carrying capacity and temperature of high voltage overhead lines is presented in this paper. Based on the heat balance equation, a product of skin-effect and iron-loss coefficients makes the ratio of AC to DC resistance in the method, and as a result, though the equation to be solved becomes more complex as the ratio being a nonlinear function with the input variables of current carrying capacity and temperature, the calculation results are more reasonable. Newton’s method is used to solve the equations and the detail calculation steps for both current carrying capacity and temperature are presented. The relationship between the ratio and the current carrying capacity is analyzed by an example under different environment conditions.
